Migrant workers in the construction industry: Recognition of the rights of the children of migrant workers

Abstract

Construction workers constitute the largest number of unorganized workers in India. They are migratory workers from various parts of India to Tamil Nadu. It is estimated that lakhs of construction workers are involved only with this state. These migrant labours includes women. The nature of work and the problems of migrant work have the greatest impact on the women and children.
Children of migrant workers face peculiar problem not usually borne by their peers with parents in other employment. Extreme poverty force people to migrate from one state to another looking for any employment that can take care of their economic needs. One of the most vulnerable seekers among the migrants are the children. This study seeks to study the problem of children who belong to migrant workers at construction sites.
